Using a stump grinder for removal of a tree stump works exactly as it sounds. A machine with a high-speed disk with specially designed teeth made of carbide grinds the stump into small chips.

That's a hard question to answer as there are many factors that go into coming up with a price on stump grinding. We've ground stumps from 1 inch all the way up to 15 feet in diameter. We have several grinders ranging from very large to small and portable. So access to the stump is an important factor when determining price. The first question we'd ask is if the stump is in the front yard or the backyard as which machine to use is a big factor. Our Large and Medium sized grinders are designed to be able to fit through a standard 36" Gate. Our small grinder can get anywhere but it takes more time to grind with and is alot more work.
The next question we'd ask would be the diameter of the stump. A stump thats 30" in diameter actually has 4 times the material in it than a stump thats 15". How tall is the stump? If the stump is cut 2" above the ground it makes it alot easier than one thats 4 feet tall. With a taller stump we'd have to bring a chainsaw and cut the stump lower and then haul away the piece we cut off. Is the stump in turf/dirt or is it in landscaping rocks? Our grinder uses very expensive carbide teeth. it can grind through rocks and even concrete, but that wears the teeth down substantially faster and we have to charge more if the stump is in rocks to compensate for the faster wear. Normally we can grind 4-5 stumps with a set of teeth. If we're grinding through rocks that number may go down to 1-2 stumps. When we're stump grinding we grind the stump itself to 8-10" below grade. We can go deeper if need be for planting of a new tree. We then rake the mulch back into the hole and leave it on site. We can haul the mulch above grade or grind the surface roots for an additional cost.
